General: The head of the Norwegian Forest Cat is a equilateral triangle calculated from the outer bases of the areas, across the top of the head and to the front of the muzzle.  The frontal skull is flat, fitting smoothly into the nose.  The neck is well muscled, short and deep.

Ears: Set into the upper "corners" of the head triangle and as much on the sides as on the top, the ears should be moderate in size and pricked forward.  Tufting and tipping are desirable but not a requirement.

Nose: Straight profile.

Muzzle and Chin: The muzzle should flow smoothly to ears with only an allowance for the eye socket and free of any pinch.  The chin should be strong and gently rounded.

Eyes: Large and expressive, almond-shaped, the aperture set obliquely, the outer corners higher than the inner.  All shades of green and gold are permitted regardless of coat color.  White cats may be blue or odd-eyed.

Body: Moderate, well-boned and muscled; the females bring proportionately  less so.  (Note: This is a slowly maturing cat and allowance should be made for cats under two years of age.) The lower abdomen may display fatty pads, particularly in the cold months and should not be considered a sign of obesity.

Legs and Feet: Legs are moderate in length and strongly coupled, the hind legs slightly longer than the front, raising the rump.  Thighs should be well developed with a considerable depth of flank.  The feet should be rounded and heavily tufted.

Tail: Equal to body length from base of tail to shoulder, heavily furred and substantial.

Coat: A distinguishing double coat.  The coat is uneven but, should be smoothly groomed to show pattern.  Undercoat is dense and woolly, outer coat semi-long with visible guard hairs.  (Note: Colors other than brown mackerel tabby are usually of different texture.) the ruff is short at the nape, flows into full mutton chops and cascades into a substantial bib.  The britches should be very full.

Condition and Balance: The cat should be healthy and alert, bright-eyed, firm and muscular with no sign of obesity nor emaciation.  The coat should be clean without oiliness nor stickiness.  Viewed from the side the Norwegian Forest Cat should appear Square.
